Community Language Learning was designed by a Jesuit Priest named Charles Curran. He was a counsellor and professor of psychology and his approach emphasises the role of the teacher as counsellor.
The method encourages students to interact and develop their language abilities by having meaningful conversations, which are dictated by the students themselves. The support from the teacher can be quite intensive and requires more energy than a typical teacher's role may do. A learner can remain silent until comfortable, then will begin to develop confidence in the language, aided by the teacher. Eventually the student will feel relaxed enough to use the language independently.
It will incorporate translation and transcription, and may use recording techniques.
