The Communicative Approach or Communicative Language Teaching as it is more often known today, is a way of developing communication through real life situations. It looked at the function-notional aspects of language, rather than concentrating on solely the grammar. This meant that learners would often have the ability to use complex structures in the correct situations, without grading the language for their level. The problem is that the method favours the Native speaker teacher as the language utterances can be unpredictable. The purpose is to give students the ability to function well outside the classroom. Of course first they need to have the desire to communicate.
